Turn Instagram comments into replies and DMs, automatically
When someone comments your keyword, AutoDM replies under the comment and sends them a private message with your link, using Instagram's official API. You host it, you own the data, and there is no monthly fee.
How it works
Three things happen within seconds of a comment.
- Step 1
Someone comments a keyword
For example “GUIDE” on your post or reel. Instagram sends the comment to your copy of AutoDM.
- Step 2
AutoDM replies in public
A short reply under the comment, picked at random from your variants so it doesn't look robotic.
- Step 3
And sends a private DM
Your link goes straight to their inbox, with an optional button. Everything is logged in Activity.
What you get
Everything you need for comment-to-DM, nothing you pay for.
Keyword rules per post
Whole word, exact comment or contains. Case, accents and emoji are handled for you.
Replies that vary
Several public reply variants per rule, plus {username} and {keyword} in your messages.
Activity and analytics
Every comment, what matched and what was sent, with reasons for skips and failures. CSV export.
Safe by default
Signed webhooks, encrypted tokens, one DM per comment and no duplicate sends.
Your keys, your data
You create your own Meta app and everything lives in your own database.
Easy to host
Vercel + Supabase on free tiers, or one Docker image on your own server.
What people use it for
Freebies and lead magnets
“Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the PDF.” The link arrives in seconds, even at 3 a.m.
Small shops
“Comment PRICE for the price list.” Send the catalogue or the order form link automatically.
Events and launches
Hand out the registration link to everyone who comments, and see how many asked for it.
Creators and educators
Share the tutorial, preset or resource link mentioned in a reel without copy-pasting all day.
Good to know before you start
These limits come from Instagram and Meta, not from AutoDM. Every comment-to-DM tool has them.
- One DM per comment
- Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it.
- 1000 characters
- Maximum DM text length. Keep messages short and to the point.
- Development vs Live
- New Meta apps start in Development mode: only you and invited Instagram Testers trigger it until you go Live.
- Professional account
- Your Instagram account must be Business or Creator, with access to messages turned on.
Common questions
Is it really free?
The software is free and open source under the MIT license. There are no plans, no per-contact or per-message fees and no limits on posts, keywords or campaigns.
You pay only for hosting if you go beyond free tiers. Instagram's API itself is free to use. Limits come from Meta (see below), not from AutoDM.
Do I need to know how to code?
No, but you need to be comfortable following a step-by-step guide: creating free accounts on Supabase and Vercel, copying a few values between websites, and creating an app in the Meta developer dashboard. Plan 30 to 60 minutes.
Can I send more than one DM per comment?
No. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment. You can send more messages only after the person replies to you, which opens Instagram's normal 24-hour messaging window.
DM text is limited to 1000 characters. You can add one optional link button.
My test comment did nothing. Why?
Comments from your own connected account are always skipped, so the app never replies to itself. Test from a second Instagram account.
While your Meta app is in Development mode, that second account must be added as an Instagram Tester (App roles → Roles → Add People) and must accept the invite in Instagram (Settings → Website permissions → Apps and websites → Tester invites). Also check that the webhook is verified with the comments field subscribed, and that the kill switch in Settings → Processing is off.
